Allumeria NPC Housing: Comfort, Beds and All Four NPCs

What Comfort actually measures

Comfort is a room check, and it is used for two different things: whether an NPC’s living conditions are good enough, and whether an area is safe and comfortable for you to sleep in. The check looks at whether the room is enclosed, minimum and maximum light values, natural light, and which blocks are in the room.

That last point is the one people miss — Comfort reads the materials, not just the geometry. A room of bare stone and a room of planks and bookshelves score differently.

Getting an NPC to move in

  1. Build an enclosed room. Walls, a roof, a door, a floor.
  2. Light it. There is a baseline light level below which nothing will move in.
  3. Craft an NPC Sign and place it. The sign designates the room, lets you name it, lets you open or close it to NPCs, and lets you move an NPC in from another room.
  4. Wait. NPCs attempt to move into homes four times a day.

Then talk to them. The dialogue has a Comfort option that reports back on the room — the official screenshots show the Builder saying the room size is perfect, the area is well lit and there are enough crafting stations. As of patch 0.15.2, comfort updates automatically when you talk to an NPC instead of requiring you to click “check comfort” on the sign.

The four NPCs and what each one wants

  • Builder — sells building materials and tools: wallpaper, bookshelves, stone paths. Wants crafting stations in their room. Also the only source of beds, which cannot be crafted.
  • Farmer — sells farming tools, seeds and fishing supplies. Wants to live in a greenhouse with lots of direct sunlight.
  • Merchant — general goods and basic items. No specific requirement beyond a well-decorated room.
  • Blacksmith — currently sells electronics and logic items, which the developer openly admits “doesn’t make sense, I know” and may change. Wants exposed lava and furnaces in their room.

Shops only open when requirements are met. An NPC who has moved in but will not sell you anything is telling you their needs are unmet, not that the shop is broken. That is the “Business Opportunity” achievement: meet an NPC’s requests and access their shop.

Beds and sleeping

Beds changed meaningfully in Early Access:

  • They are bought from the Builder, never crafted.
  • They do not instantly skip the night. Higher comfort makes time pass faster while you sleep.
  • They can be painted to change the bedsheet colour.
  • Patch 0.15.3 dropped the minimum light level for comfortable sleeping from 5 to 1, so a single torch is now enough.

Buying a bed and sleeping in it is the “Way Past Bedtime” achievement. Building a house an NPC actually moves into is “A Lovely Shoebox”.

When it does not work

The NPC system was the roughest part of the launch build, and Infinimelon said so directly after release. Patch 0.15.2 fixed the main causes:

  • The minimum light calculation was changed.
  • Placed lava was interfering with a room’s minimum light level.
  • Glass stairs and slabs no longer block direct sunlight — which was breaking greenhouses, and the patch notes apologise for it specifically.
  • Comfort scanning was reworked, and duplicate NPCs were addressed.

So if you are following a launch-week guide and your greenhouse still fails the Farmer’s sunlight check, update the game first — that exact case was a bug, and it is fixed.
